Day 23: Shadow
As Lilly sat back in her wooden chair behind the register counter at her work, she let out a relatively bored yawn. It was a slow day at the antique shop yet again-- not many visitors, let alone buyers. She didn't mind it, given it gave her a bit more free time to herself or a bit more free time to tidy up the shop. As one would likely think, when items sit on shelves for a while, they tend to gather dust-- so she had to make sure that each and every item was well-kept! Since things were going a bit slow, she decided to get up from her chair, get her handy feather duster from off the nearby hook, and get to cleaning. As she cleaned, she took a bit of the time to look over each item. True antiques, some a bit older than others, items with age and a story to tell... it was all fascinating, which was one of the reasons she wanted this job. However, she paused in her dusting when she came across one of the recently donated items-- an old shadow box featuring a little forest scene made of cut-out black board paper. It even had a rather thin, semi-transparent back to it so warm candlelight could illuminate it from behind without harming the scene. She smiled softly at the item, taking in the novelty of it. A simple framed box with cut-out paper, set up in such a way that, when a light was cast upon it, the shadows would work to create a wonderful little sight to see. She commonly knew shadows to be things that could be scary, interesting, or funny in some cases, but she didn't even think them to be that artistic until now. Who knows? Maybe after this, she might just look up some other forms of how shadows could be used to make art.
